...His first novel, Notre-Dame des Fleurs (1944), and his second, The Miracle of the Rose (1946), both depict the world of criminals and homosexuals, but the raw and extravagant prose, which transforms the strangeness, filth, and evil of the author's imagination into beauty and holiness, made Genet, the "thief writer," known in the avant-garde literary world of Paris, even though they were secretly published. The year 1947, when Jouvet's play Les bonnes premiered, was also the year when his novels The Funeral and The Thugs of Brest were published, but at the same time Genet was sentenced to life imprisonment as a habitual thief. Cocteau, JP Sartre, F. Mauriac, P. Claudel and others petitioned the president for a pardon, and Genet was able to make a living as a writer.
