A group of about 10 manuscripts, ivory reliefs, and painters and ivory artists from the Carolingian dynasty. It is named after the Gospels donated by Abbess Ada of Trier, sister of Charles the Great. This school of painting was centered around the court and led by Godescalc. They adopted ancient-style fleshing and the impressionistic use of light and shadow, and arranged them in ancient-style architecture and frameworks, becoming part of the Carolingian Renaissance. The ivory reliefs follow the style of manuscript miniatures. Works include the Gospels of Godescalc (late 8th century, Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris), the Gospels of Ada (Bibliothèque Municipale de Trier), and the Gospels of Saint Médard of Soissons (Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris).
