…(3) The crayon method was invented in 1757 by Jean-Charles François (1717-69) to reproduce the powdery effect of chalk or pastel paintings by making plates with a tool with many small projections called mullets or roulets on an anticorrosive coating. Gilles Demarteau (1729-76) and Louis-Marin Bonnet (1743-93) were masters of this technique, the latter of whom produced elaborate multicolor prints using several plates.
