…This arrangement was called the “Tunnel Snake” because the EC currencies of 21/4% width snaked through the 41/2% tunnel set by the IMF. However, in March 1973, the EC countries adopted a floating exchange rate system for non-regional currencies, so the tunnel disappeared and the EC Common Float was launched. The number of countries joining and leaving the Tunnel Snake and the Common Float changed rapidly, and by 1978 it had been reduced to a mini-Common Float consisting only of West Germany and neighboring countries. As a result, the EC, which aims to promote European monetary integration, launched the European Monetary System (EMS) in March 1979 with the participation of eight countries excluding the UK. …
