Tonle Sap (Lake) (English spelling)

Japanese: トンレ･サップ[湖]（英語表記）Tonle Sap

A large lake in central Cambodia. In Cambodian, it means "wide expanse of fresh water." It is connected to the Mekong River through the Tonle Sap River, and drains water during the dry season (November to April), but the Mekong River flows back into it during the rainy season (May to October). It functions as a natural regulating lake, with the lake's surface area being about 3,000 km2 during the dry season and more than three times that size during the flood season. The lake is normally 1 to 2 meters deep, and its circumference is about 280 km. It is known for the wild floating rice that grows on the lake shore. It is one of the world's leading freshwater fish fishing grounds, and the fishing season is during the dry season.

カンボジア中央部にある大湖。カンボジア語で〈淡水の広いひろがり〉の意味。トンレ･サップ川を通じてメコン川とつながり，乾季の渇水期(11～4月)に排水するが，雨季の増水期(5～10月)にはメコン川の河流が逆流してくる。自然の調節湖の機能を果たし，渇水期の湖水面積は約3000km2，増水期には3倍強に膨張する。水深は通常で1～2m，湖の周囲は約280km。湖岸に野生の浮稲があることで知られる。世界有数の淡水魚の漁場で，漁期は渇水期である。
