Epstein - Sir Jacob Epstein

Epstein - Sir Jacob Epstein

British sculptor. Born in New York to Russian and Polish parents. He studied at the Art Students League in New York and then moved to France. He studied at the Paris Art School and also studied under Rodin, and was interested in ancient Egyptian sculpture at the Louvre. He lived in London since 1905, and introduced the avant-garde French sculpture of the time to Britain. In 1908, he created 18 sculptures for the building of the Royal Medical Association, which seem to have been influenced by Egypt and Assyria. He also worked on many religious subjects, such as "Genesis" and "Christ". He produced many works after that, and one of the characteristics of his works is that he carved directly into stone, cast iron, bronze, etc., leaving each material raw, and distorting the forms from realism, which is probably due to his strong emotions and will. He had a great influence on the conservative British sculpture world at that time.
