Born: August 11, 1861, Novgorod [Died] February 25, 1906. Terijoki, Finland. Russian composer and pianist. From 1879 to 1882, he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and in 1882 was appointed professor of harmony and counterpoint at the Moscow Conservatory. Following in the footsteps of Tchaikovsky, he achieved success with the opera Dreams on the Volga (1892). In 1895, on the recommendation of M. Balakirev, he became the conductor of the St. Petersburg court choir. His works include three operas, two symphonies, a violin concerto, a cantata, church music, chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
