...the westerly winds over the mid-latitudes, known as the westerly winds, are thermal winds caused by temperatures being lower at higher latitudes than at lower latitudes.

When an isobar is curved as shown in the right of Figure 4, in order for the airflow to bend without crossing the isobar, a centripetal force must act in the direction of the center of curvature of the airflow path. In other words, the centripetal force acts in addition to the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis force to maintain equilibrium.
