1855‐1920 Founder of the Romanian socialist movement. Born in Ukraine. He joined the Narodnik movement while studying at Kharkov University, but fled to Romania in 1875 due to persecution by the authorities, where he remained for the rest of his life. He corresponded widely with European socialists and worked to spread Marxist thought, becoming a leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (later the Communist Party). As a thinker, he is known for his unique literary criticism and social theory, but his theory (his main work, New Serfdom), which pointed out the enslavement of peasants and the progression of feudalism in rural areas after the emancipation of serfs, was criticized by the Soviet Union and the Romanian Communist Party in the 1930s and has been reevaluated in recent years.
