It existed as the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the former Russian Soviet Republic, but in August 1990 it declared itself a sovereign state and is now part of the Russian Federation as the Republic of Tatarstan. It is located west of the Ural Mountains, in the middle reaches of the Volga River, with an area of 68,000 km2 and a population of 3,723,000 (1993). Its capital is Kazan. It was established as an autonomous republic in May 1920. The ethnic makeup is evenly split between the two major ethnic groups, Tatars (48%) and Russians (43%), with the Chuvash, Moldavians, and Udmurts, minorities in the region, and Ukrainians who immigrated with the Russians making up a few percent (1989).
