The diary of Kanpaku (regent). It is also called "Gyokukai". It consists of 66 volumes, plus one volume of Yanagiharahon. The articles cover the period from 1164 (Chokan 2) to 1203 (Kennin 3), from the age of 16 to 55 for Kanzane. Kanzane was the third son of Kanpaku Tadamichi. Along with his elder brothers Konoe Motozane and Matsudono Motofusa, he chose the path of politics. The contents of the diary can be broadly divided into his 20 years as Minister of the Right during the heyday of the Taira clan, his 10 years as regent in cooperation with the Kamakura shogunate, and his subsequent 7 years of seclusion. It covers a wide range of topics, including government and military affairs, the activities of the regents, court ceremonies, and personal matters. The turbulent era of conflict between the imperial and military governments is well depicted through descriptions of such influential figures of the era as Taira no Kiyomori, Minamoto no Yoshinaka, Yoshitsune, and Yoritomo, and the book accurately and clearly captures a world where the long traditions of court noble culture intersected with the new light of the samurai era, making it the highlight of court noble diaries in terms of both quality and quantity. It is included in the "Kokusho Kankokai Sosho" series.
