In the Edo period, when the shogunate, feudal lords, imperial court, nobles, temples and shrines transported luggage, they attached tags to indicate that the luggage belonged to them. They were also called denfu or gyorigfu. They were also written as efu. Kaifu were mostly made of wood, and there were two types: efu, which were hung from luggage with a string through a hole drilled at the top of the board, and tachiefu, which were attached to luggage with a handle attached to the bottom. Those for the shogunate and imperial court were written with "Goyo" (official business) in ink under the chrysanthemum or chrysanthemum crest, while those for daimyo had the name of the castle town location written under their respective family crest, and those for temples and shrines had "Chion-in Goyo" written under their crest, for example.
