Kinkodo Kamesuke
Year of death: Tempo 8 (1837)
Year of birth: Meiwa 2 (1765)
A Kyoto ware potter from the late Edo period. His real name was Toki Kamesuke, Tamba-ya Kamesuke. He also penned the pen name Kamesuke. His family had been clay figurines of Fushimi dolls for generations in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture) under Ichinohashi-shita on the Fushimi Kaido road, but he decided to pursue pottery, and studied pottery techniques under Okuda Eisen along with Aoki Mokubei, Ninnami Dohachi, and Rakujidatei Kasuke. He excelled in copying Chinese ceramics such as celadon, blue and white porcelain, and Kochi, and showed particular talent in sculptural molded works. Around Bunka 7 (1810), he was invited to Mita in Settsu to teach Mita ware, where he used his specialty in molded object molding techniques to lay the foundations for Mita celadon, which is typified by celadon floating patterns made with pressed patterns. In 1818, he instructed at a porcelain kiln for Ojiyama ware in Tanba Sasayama, and in 1826, he instructed at Zuishiba ware, a type of Oniwa ware in the Kishu Domain, and in 1828, he was invited back to the Sasayama Domain to instruct at Ojiyama ware. In 1829, he wrote "Pottery Instruction," which focused on porcelain and included specific details on kiln types, kiln stacking, mixing of base and glaze, celadon, Nishiki ware, and the Kochi method.
