A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family, native to the Himalayas. It is resistant to cold and is often planted as an ornamental plant in Japan. It has glossy, obovate leaves about 15 to 20 cm long that grow at the base and have hairy edges. These leaves turn red in autumn. In spring, a flower stalk about 20 cm high grows from the center of the plant, and many pink flowers bloom in a cluster at the top. The flowers are about 3 cm long with five petals and yellow stamens in the center. There are many horticultural varieties, including double-flowered and white-flowered varieties.
