A Greek state (1204-1340) established by Michael I of the Angelids, a former dynasty of the Byzantine Empire, with Arta as its capital during the occupation of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade. His successor, Theodore I, destroyed the Latin kingdom of Thessaloniki (1224) and was crowned "Emperor of the Romans", but was defeated by the Bulgarian king Assen II at Klokotnitsa (1230), and the power of the empire rapidly declined. The empire was divided in two, with Thessaloniki falling into the hands of the Nicaean Empire in 1246, and the remaining part being further divided into Epirus and Thessaly after the death of Michael II (1271), each of which was ruled by a different branch of the Angelids.
