...In addition, the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 saw Hungarians cede many Hungarian-inhabited areas to neighboring countries, and during the interwar period, fanatical nationalism (known as "revisionism") that sought to revise borders dominated the country. Horthy himself was a traditional conservative, and in the 1920s, Bethlen István (1874-1947), who held the same views, served as prime minister. However, in the 1930s after the Great Depression, right-wing radicalism, represented by Gömbes, grew, and Hungary sought to establish a totalitarian regime and drew closer to Nazi Germany. In 1939, Hungary joined the Anti-Comintern Pact with Germany and Italy, and in 1940, it joined the Tripartite Pact with Germany, Italy, and sent troops to the war against the Soviet Union.
