Year of death: April 8, 1718 (May 7, 1718) Year of birth: May 28, 1679 (July 6, 1679) A Confucian scholar of the mid-Edo period. His given name was Hajime Ryosuke, later Ryo. His pen name was Denryo, later Kanryo. He was commonly known as Hajime Sho(Sho)zo, later Kansuke. Tenmin was his posthumous name. He was born to a wealthy farming family in Yokooji Village, Kii County, Yamashiro Province (Kyoto City). His father was Muneya, his mother was a member of the Nagata family, and Seidokoro was his older brother. He lived in Kyoto City from an early age, and in 1691 (Genroku 4) he and Seidokoro became pupils of Ito Jinsai and studied Kogigaku. Around 1708 (Hoei 5), he began to have doubts about Jinsai's theory, and developed a comprehensive criticism, forming his own academic field. It is said that after Jinsai's death, the Kogidō was divided into those studying under Togai and those studying under Tenmin.
