He was born to a wealthy farming family in Yokooji Village, Kii County, Yamashiro Province (Kyoto City). His father was Muneya, his mother was a member of the Nagata family, and Seidokoro was his older brother. He lived in Kyoto City from an early age, and in 1691 (Genroku 4) he and Seidokoro became pupils of Ito Jinsai and studied Kogigaku. Around 1708 (Hoei 5), he began to have doubts about Jinsai's theory, and developed a comprehensive criticism, forming his own academic field. It is said that after Jinsai's death, the Kogidō was divided into those studying under Togai and those studying under Tenmin. His posthumous writings include "Tenmin's Testament." <References> Wakida Masako, "Namikawa Tenmin's Confucian Thought" ("An Essay on the History of Japanese Thought") (Masahiko Miyake) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
