[Austrian rule]
The military victory of Austria over the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 17th century again threatened Transylvania's independence. Around this time, Bethlen Miklós (1642-1717), the head of the Transylvanian government, advocated the idea of ​​Transylvanianism, which sought to protect Transylvanian independence while obtaining guarantees of religious freedom and autonomy from Austria. However, after Ferenc Rákóczi's war of liberation against Austria in 1703-11, which was fought with the participation of Magyars, Romanians, Slovaks, and Ukrainian peasants, failed, Transylvania's chances of securing its independence were lost.
