Born: February 11, 1741 in Liège Died September 24, 1813. Belgian composer from Montmorency near Paris. He studied in Rome from 1759, and then began his career as an opera composer. In Rome, he released his first intermezzo, The Grape Harvesters, in 1765. In 1767, he moved to Paris, where his operas became a huge hit, and he wrote many more works afterwards, marking a new era in the opéra-comique. His main works include The Talking Pictures (1769), Zémir and Azor (1771), and Richard the Lionheart (1784). In the 1790s, he stopped composing operas and devoted himself to writing literature and philosophy.
