1702‐82 A Swabian Pietist in Germany. He studied a wide range of subjects, including theology, Oriental languages, philosophy, mathematics, medicine, and chemistry. He attempted to overcome the division of philosophy into materialism and idealism by connecting with the traditions of Kabbalah, alchemy, and the natural mysticism of Boehme and Helmont. His theology centers on "life," "body," and "sensual things" as manifestations of the invisible spiritual. He considered "life" to be electrical, and linked theology with theology. He hoped for the return of a golden age through "universal learning" that would unite natural science and religion. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
