[The formation and development of modern engineering education]
From the mid-18th century onwards, various technical schools began to be established all over Europe, such as the École des Ponts et Chausées (established in 1747) in France, and the Bergakademie Freiberg (established in 1765). This was because engineers with advanced and systematic knowledge were needed to build and develop modern nations and carry out the Industrial Revolution.
