...The Schmidt camera, invented in 1930, is famous as a wide-angle, bright optical system, but the corrector plate used to eliminate spherical aberration is a highly aspherical one and is not easy to manufacture. Around 1942, Dmitrii Dmitrievich Maksutov (1896-1964) of the Soviet Union introduced a thick meniscus lens as a substitute for the corrector plate, and created a bright wide-angle camera using only spherical surfaces. Due to the limitations of the glass material of the thick meniscus lens, the aperture was limited to 75 cm, so the aperture ratio could not be made extremely bright, and the correction of aberration is much inferior to that of the Schmidt camera, but it is widely used in observatories in Eastern European countries. ...
