Mole (English spelling)

Japanese: モル - もる（英語表記）mole

A unit of quantity of substance expressed by the number of elementary particles such as atoms and molecules that make up a substance, and is one of the base units of the SI. Since the discovery of the fundamental laws of chemistry, units such as gram atom and gram molecule have been used to express the amount of substance, but because these relate to the determination of "atomic weight" and "molecular weight," which are the relative masses of atoms and molecules, different definitions have been used between physicists and chemists. To unify this, the General Conference on Weights and Measures gave the name "mole" to the unit of quantity of substance in 1971 and defined it as "the amount of substance of a system containing a number of elementary particles equal to the number of atoms present in 0.012 kg of carbon-12."

物質を構成する原子、分子などの要素粒子の数で表す物質量の単位で、SIの基本単位の1つ。化学において基本諸法則が発見されて以来、物質量を表すのにグラム原子、グラム分子などの単位が用いられてきたが、これらは原子、分子の相対質量である「原子量」「分子量」の決め方に関係するため、物理学者と化学者との間で異なる定義が用いられていた。これを統一するため、1971年の国際度量衡総会は物質量の単位に「モル」という名称を与え、「モルは0.012 kgの炭素12の中に存在する原子の数と等しい数の要素粒子を含む系の物質量である」と定義。
