Ghost sea scaly - Ciona intestinalis

Japanese: ユウレイボヤ(幽霊海鞘) - ユウレイボヤ（英語表記）Ciona intestinalis

A protochordate (illustration) of the family Ciona in the class Ascidiaceae. It is so named because it glows faintly at night. It can live in water temperatures of 0 to 30°C or higher, so it is widely distributed throughout Japan and the world, attaching to the bottom of aquaculture rafts and boats in inland bays. Its body is cylindrical and 7 to 8 cm high, and its rear end attaches to other objects. The outer skin of the body is pale yellow or transparent and soft gelatinous, allowing the internal structure to be seen through it. There are 5 to 7 prominent longitudinal muscle bands on each side of the fascial body. The entry hole is tubular at the anterior end, and the exit hole opens slightly behind the entry hole.

ホヤ綱ユウレイボヤ科の原索動物（イラスト）。夜間にぼんやり光るようすからこの名がある。水温が0～30℃以上でも生活できるため，日本各地から世界各地に広く分布していて，内湾の養殖いかだ桟橋や船底に付着する。体は高さ7～8cmの円筒形で，後端で他物に付着する。体の外皮は淡黄色か透明な軟らかいゼラチン質なために体内の構造がすけて見える。筋膜体の各側には5～7本の著しい縦走筋帯がある。入水孔は前端にあって管状にのび，出水孔は入水孔のやや後方に開いている。
