Malabar coast - Malabar coast

The west coast of the southern part of the Indian peninsula. It stretches for 950 km from Goa in the north to Cape Comorin in the south. It is limited by the steep cliffs of the Western Ghats, and its width is only about 60 km at its widest. Inland, coastal terraces with laterite crusts have developed, and the coastal areas are rich in sand dunes and lagoons. Although there is a short dry season in winter, the southeast trade winds bring 2,000 to 4,000 mm of precipitation per year, and the climate is hot and humid. As a result, coconut cultivation is popular in the hills and sand dunes, and there are also specialty products such as pepper and cardamom. Major cities include Panaji, Mangalore, Kozhikode, Cochin, Quilon, and Trivandrum.

インド半島南部の西海岸。北はゴアから南はコモリン岬まで950キロメートルにわたって続く。背後を西ガーツ山脈の急崖(きゅうがい)によって限られ、幅は最大でも60キロメートルほどしかない。内陸部にはラテライト皮殻をもつ海岸段丘が発達し、海岸部には砂丘と潟湖(せきこ)が多い。冬季に短い乾期をもつものの、南東貿易風がもたらす降水量は年2000～4000ミリメートルにも及び、高温多湿である。そのため丘陵地や砂丘におけるココナッツ類の栽培が盛んで、こしょう、カルダモンなどの特産品もある。主要都市として、パナジーをはじめ、マンガロール、コジコーデ、コーチン、クイロン、トリバンドラムなどがある。
