…Under the influence of Gauss, research into the topology of surfaces became active, and Möbius, Riemann, and others studied how surfaces are connected, discovering the famous Möbius strip, a surface that cannot be oriented (1857), and developing the concept of the Riemann surface, which plays an important role in function theory (1851). The word topology also first appeared in literature as the title of a pamphlet written by JB Listing (1808-82) in 1847. Following these people, surfaces were also studied by C. Jordan, L. Schläfli (1814-95), and W. F. von Dyck (1856-1934), and by the end of the 19th century, the classification of closed surfaces by homeomorphism was completed. …

…ガウスの影響で曲面の位相幾何学の研究が活発となり，メービウス，リーマンらによって曲面のつながり方の研究がなされ，向きのつけられない曲面として有名なメービウスの帯が発見され(1857)，また関数論で重要な役割をなすリーマン面の概念が得られた(1851)。トポロジーということばも，リスティングJ.B.Listing(1808‐82)が1847年に書いた小冊子の表題として初めて文献に現れた。曲面はこれらの人たちに続いて，C.ジョルダン，シュレーフリL.Schläfli(1814‐95)，ディックW.F.A.von Dyck(1856‐1934)らによっても研究され，19世紀末葉には閉曲面の同相による分類が完成した。…
