750-821 Saint and organizer of Benedictine monasticism in the Frankish Kingdom. His real name was Witiza. Born into a Visigothic noble family, he served at the Frankish court before entering the sainthood in 774. Since founding a reform monastery in Agniens in southern France (779), he has worked to introduce the Benedictine Rule to the Frankish monastic world, and assisted Louis I in his church reforms, aiming for fundamental reform of church and state through the church councils of 816 and 817.
