Chemical formula: HOOCCOCH ₂ CH ₂ COOH. It is a member of the citric acid cycle (aerobic respiration of cells) and is produced by oxidative decarboxylation of isocitrate by isocitrate dehydrogenase localized in mitochondria. It is also a representative α-keto acid closely related to glutamic acid, and is produced by oxidative deamination of glutamic acid. It plays an important role as an amino group receptor in various transamination reactions. In the fermentation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia marcescens, large amounts of α-ketoglutaric acid are produced from glucose.

化学式HOOCCOCH₂CH₂COOH。クエン酸回路(細胞の好気的呼吸)の一員であり，ミトコンドリアに局在するイソクエン酸デヒドロゲナーゼによってイソクエン酸が酸化的脱炭酸されることにより生成する。またグルタミン酸とも関係深い代表的α‐ケト酸で，グルタミン酸の酸化的脱アミノ反応によっても生成する。種々のアミノ基転移反応におけるアミノ基受容体(レセプター)として重要な役割を果たす。シュードモナス(緑膿（りよくのう）菌)，霊菌などの発酵では，ブドウ糖から大量にα‐ケトグルタル酸がつくられる。
