Maruo [Hot Springs] - Maruo

Japanese: 丸尾[温泉] - まるお

This hot spring is part of the Kirishima Onsenkyo hot spring resort in Makizono Town, Aira County, northeastern Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a simple hydrogen sulfide spring with temperatures of 36-80°C. It is located on the slopes of Mount Kirishima and, together with the neighboring Hayashida Onsen, is a center of tourism in Kirishima. It is said to have been discovered in 1819 (Bunsei 2), but from the mid-Meiji period onwards it was developed as a villa area, and in 1917 an inn was built and it developed into a hot spring resort. Nearby are famous spots such as Maruo Falls, Nunobiki Falls, and the stone pavement known as Senjojiki. There is a bus service from Kirishima-Jingu Station on the Nippo Main Line. 鹿児島県北東部，姶良（あいら）郡牧園町の霧島温泉郷に含まれる温泉。単純硫化水素泉，36～80℃。霧島山中腹に位置し，隣接する林田温泉とともに霧島観光の中心地。1819年(文政2)に発見されたといわれるが，明治中期以降，別荘地として開け，1917年には旅館が建設されて温泉地として発展した。付近には丸尾の滝，布引の滝，千畳敷といわれる石畳などの名所がある。日豊本線霧島神宮駅からバスが通じる。【榊原貴士】
