They are also called glycosylceramides. The simplest type is cerebroside, which contains sugar linked by a β-glycosidic bond to the hydroxyl group of ceramide (a structural unit in which a fatty acid is linked to the amino group of sphingosine via an amide bond) (Figure 6).
