A city on Lake Michigan in northeastern Illinois, USA. It borders Chicago to the north. The town's origins date back to 1853, when Chicago businessmen purchased land for Northwestern University, which was founded in 1851. The city was named after one of the founders, J. Evans. Known as an educational and religious city, it is home to many higher education institutions and research institutes, and in 1854 the World Congress of Christianity was held here. Although it is a residential suburb of Chicago, it is home to manufacturing industries such as steel products, paint, chemical products, and food products, as well as publishing companies. It is also home to the Rotary International headquarters. Population 73,233 (1990).
