Knights of Labor

Knights of Labor

An American labor union. It was founded in 1869 by tailors in Philadelphia as a secret organization with mystical rituals. T. V. Powderly became president in 1879, and it grew rapidly from when it became a public organization in 1881, reaching its peak in 1886 with 700,000 members. It emphasized the unity of all workers, organized workers widely regardless of occupation, skill level, or race, and engaged in active struggles. Its ultimate goal was to liberate the working class from the control of capital by establishing cooperatives, and it participated in various reform movements, including political actions. It had branches all over the country, including rural areas, and was also established in Canada and the United Kingdom, but it declined after 1886, ceding leadership of the American labor movement to the AFL and virtually disappearing in the 1990s. In France, the Chevalerie du Travail Française, a secret organization led by labor union officials and politicians, was also established in 1893.
