British social anthropologist. After studying history, he conducted detailed social anthropological research on the Azande and Nuer peoples of Sudan from 1926 to 1940. During World War II, he served in the military while researching the Anuak people of Sudan, and after the war he researched the Sanusi people of Libya. During this time, he taught at the University of London, the University of Egypt (now Cairo University), Oxford University, Cambridge University, and other universities, before becoming a professor at Oxford University in 1946, succeeding Radcliffe Brown.

イギリスの社会人類学者。歴史学を専攻後，1926年より40年にかけて，スーダンのアザンデ族とヌエル族(ヌアー族)で緻密な社会人類学的調査を行った。第2次大戦中は軍役に従事するかたわらスーダンのアヌアク族を調査，戦後はリビアのサヌシ族の調査をした。この間ロンドン大学，エジプト大学(現，カイロ大学)，オックスフォード大学，ケンブリッジ大学等の教職を歴任した後，46年ラドクリフ･ブラウンの後任としてオックスフォード大学教授となった。
