In 1814, at the request of The Times, Germans Friedrich König (1774-1833) and Andreas Friedrich Bauer (1783-1860) built a cylinder printing press and invented the modern method of printing by moving a flat plate back and forth and applying pressure. Previously, when the manuscripts were ready at midnight, by 6 a.m., two workers per press on 12 presses could barely print 10,000 copies, even if they worked in shifts.
