Myristyl Alcohol

Japanese: ミリスチルアルコール
Myristyl Alcohol
Chemical formula: CH 3 (CH 2 ) 13 OH. Also known as 1-tetradecanol. A straight-chain alcohol with 14 carbon atoms. Small amounts naturally occur in sperm whale oil and beaked whale oil. White crystals at room temperature. Melting point: 38°C, boiling point: 292°C, specific gravity: d 4 20 = 0.8355, refractive index: n D 20 = 1.4470. Insoluble in water, mixes freely with ether. Easily soluble in ethyl alcohol. Since it crystallizes into small pieces from a dilute ethyl alcohol solution, it is used in purification. It is used as a surfactant after conversion to sulfate ester, and as a viscosity-adding agent in various creams, stick products, and other cosmetics.
