Myristyl Alcohol

Japanese: ミリスチルアルコール

Chemical formula: CH ₃ (CH ₂ ) ₁₃ OH. Also known as 1-tetradecanol. A straight-chain alcohol with 14 carbon atoms. Small amounts naturally occur in sperm whale oil and beaked whale oil. White crystals at room temperature. Melting point: 38°C, boiling point: 292°C, specific gravity: d ₄ ²⁰ = 0.8355, refractive index: n _D ²⁰ = 1.4470. Insoluble in water, mixes freely with ether. Easily soluble in ethyl alcohol. Since it crystallizes into small pieces from a dilute ethyl alcohol solution, it is used in purification. It is used as a surfactant after conversion to sulfate ester, and as a viscosity-adding agent in various creams, stick products, and other cosmetics.

化学式CH₃(CH₂)₁₃OH。1‐テトラデカノールともいう。炭素数14の直鎖アルコール。天然にはマッコウ鯨油，ツチ鯨油などに少量存在する。室温で白色結晶。融点38℃，沸点292℃，比重d₄²⁰＝0.8355，屈折率n_D²⁰＝1.4470。水に不溶，エーテルには自由な割合で混合する。エチルアルコールに易溶。希エチルアルコール溶液から小片状に結晶するので，精製に利用される。硫酸エステル化して界面活性剤として用い，各種クリーム，スティック製品などの化粧品の粘稠度付加剤とされる。
