A wintergreen fern of the family Scutellariae, also known as Fuyuwarabi. It is widely distributed in the temperate zone of eastern Asia and up to the Himalayas, growing in sunny areas of mountains and plains. The leaves grow upright from thin fleshy underground stems, bifurcating at the base. One is a vegetative leaf with a long stalk, deeply pinnately lobed 3-4 times. The other is a sporophyte leaf divided 4 times, with thin lobes only on the axis, and large sporangia grow in clusters around the axis. The sporophyte leaves are much longer and upright than the vegetative leaves. The spores are spherical, tetrahedral, and yellow. The closely related species S. japonicum has deeply pinnately lobed vegetative leaves, is slightly larger than this species, and has sparse gray long hairs on the petioles and rachises.
