Hemoglobinuria

Hemoglobinuria
A condition in which hemoglobin (blood pigment) is mixed in the urine. When red blood cells are destroyed in the bloodstream (hemolysis), hemoglobin is released into the blood, which then passes through the glomeruli of the kidneys and is released into the urine. The condition in which red blood cells are mixed in the urine is called "hematuria," but this is different from hemoglobinuria. In hemoglobinuria, the urine often appears brown to dark brown. It is seen in hemolytic anemias such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, cold agglutinin disease, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, red blood cell fragmentation syndrome, and in diseases such as malaria and sepsis.
