King of Norway (reigned 1035-47) and Denmark (reigned 1042-47). Son of Olav II. After his father's defeat and death in the Battle of Svolvöll, he fled to Russia. He was welcomed back to Norway by Norwegian nobles who opposed the rule of Cnut II, and became king. After the death of Danish king Hardicnut, he also became king of Denmark. At first he persecuted the nobles, but later he established laws and followed them, and was called a good king. This law (Grágás) is the oldest written law in Norway, but has not been handed down.
