…these columns of lamellae are called the Haversian lamella system. They are also called osteons because they form the building blocks of bone. The outer and inner layers of compact bone (the parts adjacent to the bone marrow) are made up of several flat layers of lamellae that follow the contours of the entire bone, called the outer and inner lamellae.
