Indirect sign - silhouette sign

Japanese: 間接サイン - かんせつサイン（英語表記）silhouette sign

A type of electric sign in which light bulbs or neon tubes are hidden behind a light shielding plate with letters or figures, illuminating the surrounding wall. The surface of the plate is painted in a striking color, so that the sign letters or figures are visible in color during the day and become silhouettes at night, making them recognizable by the contrast in brightness with the surroundings. Other types of electric signs include direct signs, which expose the light bulb and draw attention with its brightness directly into the eye, and enclosed signs, which have a light source inside a translucent object.

電気サインの一種で，電球やネオンサイン管などを，文字や図形の遮光板の背面に隠して，周辺の壁面を照らすようにしたもの。型板表面には目だつ色彩を塗装して，昼間はサイン文字や図形が色づいて見え，夜間はこれがシルエットになって，周辺との輝度対比によって認識できるようにした屋外広告媒体である。電気サインにはこのほか，電球を露出して，その輝度が直接目に入り注意を引く直接サイン，半透明の物体で囲まれた内部に光源を入れた包囲サインがある。
