An electronic transition from a lone pair orbital ( n orbital) to an empty π electron orbital (π * orbital). Since lone pairs do not participate in chemical bonds, these orbitals are called n orbitals ( n stands for non-bonding). Compounds containing groups such as C=O, N=O, NO2 , N=N, and C=S have n orbitals and π orbitals, and this transition can be observed in optical absorption spectra. Generally, n orbitals are at a higher energy level than occupied π orbitals, so the energy of this transition is smaller than that of the π-π * transition, and the corresponding absorption band appears on the longer wavelength side of the spectrum. 孤立電子対の軌道(n軌道)から空のπ電子軌道(π*軌道)への電子遷移。孤立電子対は化合結合にあずからないので,その軌道をn軌道(nはnon‐bonding,すなわち非結合性の略)という。C=O,N=O,NO2,N=N,C=S等の基を含む化合物はn軌道とπ軌道をもつので,この遷移が光吸収スペクトルに観測される。一般にn軌道は被占π軌道に比べて高いエネルギー準位にあるので,この遷移のエネルギーはπ‐π*遷移のエネルギーより小さく,対応する吸収帯はスペクトルの長波長側に現れる。
