In fruit horticulture, thinning out young fruits is done when there are too many fruits or they are unevenly distributed in certain areas. The purpose is to regulate the competition for water and nutrients among the fruits and between the fruits and new shoots, thereby promoting fruit growth and maintaining tree vigor. This is generally done about one month after flowering, taking into consideration the relationship between fruit growth, quality, and leaf number. To do this, peaches are picked with fingers, and pears, apples, grapes, persimmons, etc. are thinned using scissors. Recently, a labor-saving method of thinning the fruits by spraying a low-concentration solution of a plant hormone such as indoleacetic acid or naphthaleneacetic acid (sodium or potassium salt) has come into practical use.
