N value - Enuchi

A civil engineering term. It refers to the value obtained by a standard penetration test. A standard penetration test is conducted to measure the strength of the ground as it is on-site. This test uses a borehole, and involves dropping a hollow cylindrical sampler, 5.1 cm in diameter and 81 cm long, attached to the end of a rod (steel rod) from a height of 75 cm with a 63.5 kg hammer, measuring the number of blows (N value) required to penetrate 30 cm deep to determine the hardness of the soil layer. It is not very accurate for clay layers, but is highly reliable for sand or gravel layers.

土木工学用語。標準貫入試験で求められる値をいう。地盤の強さを現地でありのままに測定するために標準貫入試験が行われる。これは、ボーリング孔を利用し、ロッドrod（鋼製の棒）の先に直径5.1センチメートル、長さ81センチメートルの中空円筒形試料採取器をつけたものを、重さ63.5キログラムのハンマーで75センチメートルの高さから自由落下させ、貫入深さ30センチメートル当りの貫入に要する打撃回数（N値）を測定して土層の硬軟を調べる試験である。粘土層では精度が悪いが、砂層または砂礫(されき)層では信頼度が高い。
