Slide guitar

Japanese: スライド･ギター（英語表記）slide guitar

A type of guitar playing technique. Instead of pressing the strings against the frets with the fingers of the left hand, a thick iron rod or cylinder is slid over the strings to produce a portamento sound. It may also refer to a type of guitar suited to this playing technique. A typical example is the steel guitar used in Hawaiian music, and in mainland America, steel guitars are used in country music. In addition, in old-style country music such as bluegrass, an acoustic guitar with a resonator called a Dobro guitar is hung horizontally from the neck and played using the slide technique.

ギター奏法の一種。弦を左手指でフレットに押しつけるかわりに，鉄製の太い棒，もしくは円筒状のものを弦上に滑らせて，ポルタメントの音を出す奏法。また，その奏法にあったタイプのギターの種類を呼ぶこともある。代表的なものにハワイアン･ミュージックのスチール･ギターがあり，アメリカ本土ではカントリー･ミュージックにスチール･ギターが使われる。このほか，ブルーグラスなど古い型のカントリー･ミュージックではドブロ･ギターDobro guitarと呼ばれる共鳴装置付きのアコースティック･ギターを首から水平につるし，スライド奏法で演奏する。
