A general term for a device that measures distance and can be considered almost synonymous with a rangefinder, but distance finders are often used to measure long distances. There are optical distance finders, which use trigonometry to find the distance from the target direction and a baseline, just like triangulation, radio distance finders, which send out radio waves and measure the distance from the time it takes for them to be reflected back or from the phase difference, and optical distance finders, which use the same principle but use light instead of radio waves and place a reflector at the position of the target to be measured.
