…In the process, he regarded elements as abstract concepts with common properties of simple substances and compounds, and, unlike his predecessors, he made a clear and conscious distinction between elements and simple substances. In the process of writing his major work, the chemistry textbook Principles of Chemistry (1868-71), he realized that the atomic weight, an invariant quantity belonging to these elements, made it possible to make comprehensive comparisons between dissimilar element families, and he discovered the periodic law (March 1869), which states that the properties of elements are periodic functions of atomic weight. For the next three years, he concentrated on research into the element system based on the periodic law, and after making detailed predictions of the properties of unknown elements in 1870, he published a nearly 100-page summary paper in a German journal in 1871. …
