Tail moss - Tail moss

Japanese: シッポゴケ - しっぽごけ
Tail moss - Tail moss
A large moss of the Scirpium family. It is found in Japan and adjacent areas, growing in colonies on humus-rich soil in slightly bright locations from lowlands to the subalpine zone. The stems reach over 10 cm in height, and have white rhizoids above ground. The leaves are needle-shaped, about 1 cm long, and spread out widely, with the midvein reaching the tip. The capsule is curved and cylindrical, with a beak-shaped tip and 16 teeth that split into two at the tip. The Japanese name comes from the plant's resemblance to an animal's tail. D. scoparium Hedw. is found widely throughout the world, and in Japan it grows in the same places as the previous species.
