...Nitroglycerin alone was too dangerous, so Nobel invented diatomaceous earth dynamite and gelatin dynamite to make it safer, and established nitroglycerin's position as an explosive material. In 1886, he also invented ballistite, a double-base smokeless powder made by mixing nitroglycerin with a large amount of nitrocellulose to make it gelatinous and insensitive to shock. Nitroglycerin is a colorless, transparent liquid with a sweet taste and a specific gravity of 1.60.
