〘noun〙 A verse with a humorous concept or content. (a) A verse that is almost insane. A verse that is said humbly or self-deprecatingly of one's own verse. ※Mudaishi (Untitled Poems of Japan) (c. 1162-64) 5th Autumn Days, Fujiwara no Michinori "A silly verse, perhaps _{_unknown} to man; I set a time _{and lit} _{a candle} , but I have not yet reached the point of reciting it." (b) In renga, a renga that is not one that has a heart, but one that has no heart. ※Renri Hisho (1349) "A mad verse: there is no way to determine this. Simply listen to it and interpret it in a way that is interesting." (c) In haikai, a verse that makes full use of humorous techniques. In particular, this was used by Matsuo Basho to refer to free, unrestrained, and refined haikai based on a spirit of madness, or the verses associated with it. ※Kata-gon (1650) 5 "In the mad verse of the Genji Hoin , he said, "Yoshi, the wheat is scorched and the flowers are raining. That is how strange it is." ※Haikai, Fuyu-no-hi (1685) "The body of this mad verse, the cold wind, resembles Takesai. [Additional note] In the world of zahai, the fourth generation of senryu (Mintei Senmaru, who took the name Senryu in 1824) used the title Haifuku Kyoku, and the fifth generation of senryu (Seisai Tsukuda, who took the name in 1835) used the title Yanagifu Kyoku, so the term came to refer to senryu in general, as in (E).

〘名〙構想や内容が滑稽な詩句。(イ) 狂気じみた詩句。自らの詩句を謙遜し、あるいは自嘲的にいう。※本朝無題詩（1162‐64頃）五・秋日即事〈藤原通憲〉「等閑狂句人知否、刻_レ燭賦_レ之未_レ足_レ吟」(ロ) 連歌で、有心(うしん)に対して無心(むしん)の連歌。※連理秘抄（1349）「狂句是はさだまれる法なし。只こころききて興あるやうにとりなすべし」(ハ) 俳諧で、滑稽な技巧を駆使している句。とくに、松尾芭蕉が称したもので、風狂の精神に基づく自由闊達で洗練された俳諧、または、その句。※かた言（1650）五「玄旨法印の御狂句(キャウク)によしやふれ麦はあしくと華の雨とのたまはせしこそおかしけれ」※俳諧・冬の日（1685）「狂句こがらしの身は竹斎に似たる哉〈芭蕉〉たそやとばしるかさの山茶花〈野水〉」(ニ) 狂詩のこと。※評判記・野郎大仏師（1667‐68）序「腹のかわのよりてもつかぬ狂句と、引もなをされぬこしおれを」(ホ) 特に、川柳(せんりゅう)の異称。[補注]雑俳では、四世川柳（眠亭賤丸、文政七年川柳を襲名）が俳風狂句、五世川柳（醒斎佃、天保八年襲名）が柳風狂句の称を用いたので、(ホ)のように川柳一般を指すようになった。
