Hirato Renkichi

Japanese:
Hirato Renkichi
Year of death: July 20, 1922
Year of birth: December 9, 1893 (Meiji 27)
A poet from the Taisho period. His real name was Kawabata Shoichi. Born in Osaka, he dropped out of Sophia University. He studied French and Italian. He seems to have started writing poetry around the end of the Meiji period, but from around 1916 (Taisho 5), when he became involved with Kawaji Ryuko's Shoko Poetry Society, he became involved in creative activities based on the new European poetry movement. In 1917, he published a new work in the inaugural issue of the magazine Nihon Shijin, which was run by Ryuko, and declared the Japanese Futurist movement. He used a lot of onomatopoeia and symbols, and type of different sizes, and created what he called a fourth aspect of poetry, which was equivalent to French Expressionism. However, this manifesto was an imitation of one published in Figaro by the Italian poet Marinetti in 1909, and was known in Japan through the translation by Mori Ogai. Renkichi was a practical writer who made such claims, but he died young from poverty and illness. <Works> Hirado Renkichi Poetry Collection <References> Chiba Nobukazu, Modern Poetry and Poets
